Ten inspiring ways to welcome the new year!
It’s the end of another year and often a time of celebration and reflection as we close the year out. What lessons did this year teach you, both good and bad? Like every morning that you wake up, the new year is your clean slate and a time to refresh and set your intentions. What are you planning to focus on in the new year? Here are ten inspiring ways to welcome the new year on New Years Day!
Get up early and watch the sunrise on New Year’s Day. It’s the first sunrise of the year and the perfect way to celebrate! Pack your picnic rug, your favourite cup of tea and a thermos and hit the beach or a mountain to soak it all in.
Pick one word that will theme your entire year. Will it be gratitude, love, abundance, success, happiness, health, family? Use a word that describes the feeling you want to uphold throughout the year, but don’t make it materialistic. This theme will guide your focus for the new year. Throughout the year, come back to this theme and let it ground you when you get off track or feel lost.
Stay motivated and focused in a different way by setting intentions instead of goals. Goals are focused on the future while intentions are focused on the present moment. Intentions are lived each day, independent of reaching a goal or destination. Feel good at the end of each day, knowing your actions have aligned with your intentions. Set up one intention for each area of your life and challenge yourself to one small action that you can do each day to get yourself there. This is a fun thing to do with the whole family.
Be inspired to stick to your intention throughout the year by writing a list of all the books you want to read in the year. Take it even further and write a list of inspiring people you would like to reach out to and meet and go for it!
Cleanse your mind, body and soul with an ocean swim. Mentally focus on your intentions for the year and dive in!
Create a Vision Board - something I have done every year. It is surprising how powerful this tool can be. When it comes to the end of the year and I look at my vision board, it’s sometimes a welcoming shock to see all the things I actually achieved on my vision board through my journey. I like to make a tangible board and physically create it by cutting things out and sticking things on, there is something very therapeutic about it. But there is also pinterest and apps that you can also use to create one. Place the vision board somewhere you can see it everyday.
Create a Gratitude Board - as much as I love vision boards, sometimes tools like this make us focus too much on the future and then we lose focus on the present moment and things we currently have around us. It can create lot of pressure around what we need to achieve, and if we get to the end of the journey it can be a source of disappointment if we do not achieve what we intended to if we let it. Therefore, it’s nice to have something that will ground us and this is why I love the idea of a gratitude board. It’s the same concept as a vision board however you focus on all the things you are grateful for and already are blessed to have in your life.
Do something you have never done before and literally throw yourself out there! There is something about getting out of your comfort zone that makes you feel alive. Start your new year in this way to set yourself up for a year of ‘pushing the boundaries’. I love that quote, ‘change begins at the end of your comfort zone.’
Use white sage to clear your house, your car and your office. Even if you are not into rituals or think that burning sage is ‘hocus pocus’, do something to physically direct your focus while you imagine that you are clearing out the past year to make way for the new year. Very powerful!
Spend the first day of the new year enjoying the time with your loved ones and reflecting on what you value the most in life.
